What I want (Part II)

When I signed up for this class I had absolutely no idea what to expect. I only knew that it was required to take at least on of two classes to attend the trip to China. Schedule conflicts did not allow me to take the other class, so I signed up for this one.

During class today it was explained what we are supposed to take away from this class. Now that the purpose is known, I can add what I want from the class, personally. My previous statement of "Learn how to avoid putting my foot in my mouth" still stands, however, there is one thing I must add.

I want to be exposed to other cultures because I need to have an understanding of why things are the way they are. I don't want to go into too much detail, but I know there are groups of people who don't like me simply because I am who I am. It would be nice to have a better understanding of why.

What I expect from the class is to achieve my two goals. It sure would be nice to get more out of it though.

The movie we watched was interesting, once I got past the bad acting, but it did show some difficult situations, and some of them I have actually been in. It is nice to be able to learn how to react in a situation without having to screw up and learn. Much like the Chinese proverb,

"The fool learns from his mistakes. The wiseman learns from the mistakes of others"

So what does the Weismann say?

  1. You brought up an interesting point that hadn't occurred to me before, really. A lot of us focus on respecting, accepting, and tolerating other cultures so much that we forget we need to learn how to be respected, accepted, and tolerated ourselves. Much food for thought. Thanks!
